Coral Island with Sunset and Dinner: What Is Actually in the Package

The Coral Island sunset trips are the one Phuket boat product where the price tells you almost nothing. Two listings within a euro and a half of each other run for four hours and for six, and watch the sun go down from different places. Twenty euros further up the list the day gets longer and the main meal quietly moves from the evening to the middle of it – while “sunset” stays in the title. And where a listing does say “dinner”, the word covers a Thai buffet handed out on deck as well as a served meal at a table.

The four-hour trip is an evening outing: out in the afternoon, one snorkel stop, eat at sea, home in the dark. The ten-hour trip is a full island day that happens to end at sunset – lunch is the main meal, a buffet at a four-star resort, and the sunset is the last hour rather than the point. The two in the middle are the same idea at different lengths.
Read the meal line before the price. A trip that feeds you lunch and shows you a sunset is not a dinner cruise, even when the listing photograph is of a table set at dusk.
Where the sunset actually happens
Three of these listings sell the sunset at Promthep Cape. The cape is the southern tip of Phuket, above Rawai, and it is the island’s best-known place to watch the sun go down – from land. You can drive or ride there for nothing, and on a clear evening it is very good and very crowded.
What these trips offer is the view from the water off the cape, which is a different picture: the headland in silhouette against the light rather than the light seen from the headland. Both are worth doing. They are not substitutes, and a listing that says “Promthep Cape sunset” is not promising to land you there.
On the monsoon side of the year this matters for a second reason. Between roughly May and October the afternoon wind on the west coast gets up, and a sunset trip sits out on the water at exactly the hour when it does. Operators cancel these more often than morning trips. Free cancellation is worth more on an evening booking than on a morning one.
What “dinner included” tends to leave out
Four things separate these packages, and none of them is in the title:
Drinks. Water and soft drinks are usually included; beer, wine and cocktails are almost never. On a sunset cruise that is where the on-board bill comes from, and it can quietly double a €44 ticket.
Where the meal is served. On deck at anchor is comfortable. Under way is not, on a catamaran or anything else. If the itinerary eats while moving, ask.
The transfer. The six-hour catamaran lists pick-up from Patong, Kata and Karon. Trips that leave from Chalong or Ao Po without a transfer mean a taxi at both ends, and the second one is after dark, when Phuket taxi prices are at their least negotiable.
Snorkelling in late light. An afternoon stop at Coral Island is calmer and emptier than the morning – the day boats have gone. It is also darker underwater, and visibility late in the day is worse than at ten in the morning. If the snorkelling is the reason you are going, the trips in snorkelling from Phuket are the better booking and the sunset trip is the wrong one.
Who it suits, and who it does not
It suits an evening when you want the sea without giving up a whole day, and it suits couples – this is the closest thing Phuket’s mid-price offers has to a romantic evening that is not a restaurant. Coral Island is 15 to 20 minutes out, so the crossing is short enough that the trip is mostly time at anchor rather than time in transit. That short hop is also why it works for people who do not love boats, unlike the long runs described in Coral and Racha or Phi Phi.
It suits families less well than it looks. The return is after dark, dinner comes late by small-children standards, and there is nowhere to put a tired four-year-old. The shorter island days with children do the same water better and earlier.
