What to See in Phuket: Which Excursions Suit Which Holiday

Phuket is not a resort with a harbour attached. It is an island roughly 50 km from top to bottom, with piers on three different coasts, and the boat that leaves from the pier nearest your hotel may be going nowhere near the islands you have in mind. The single most useful thing to settle before booking is which stretch of sea you want to spend a day on. Everything else – price, boat type, lunch – follows from that.
This guide covers the choice between the different kinds of day, not the individual programmes. Figures below come from our own inventory of GetYourGuide listings for Phuket, which held 563 offers from €9.40 with a median of €60.13 on 17 September 2026. Three boat days, not one
Most Phuket trips fall into one of three groups, and they are genuinely different days out.

Phang Nga Bay is the day for people who came for scenery rather than swimming. The Phang Nga Bay trip by big boat is listed from €41.55 for 10 hours and holds 4.7 stars from 4,121 reviews. The two-storey boat is slower than a speedboat and that is the point – you sit, you look at the karst, you get into a canoe for the caves. The longtail and sea canoe version to James Bond Island starts at €45.53 across 9 hours. Either way this is a long day for a bay that is close by, because the boat is slow and the stops are many.

The close-in islands are the underrated group. Coral Island sits about 15 minutes off Chalong, the Khai islands about the same off Ao Po. You are on a beach by mid-morning and home for dinner. Our guides to Coral and Racha against Phi Phi and to the Khai islands go through those two choices.
Two closed seasons that decide your month
This is where Phuket differs from most island destinations, and where a lot of disappointment comes from.
Maya Bay closes every year from 1 August to 30 September. It reopens on 1 October. Tours to Phi Phi still run during those two months – the boat simply views the bay from the water instead of landing. If the beach itself is the reason for your trip, that matters enormously; if you wanted the islands generally, it barely changes the day.
The Similan Islands close from mid-May to mid-October. The park reopens on 15 October 2026 for the 2026–27 season. That closure is not negotiable and it is not weather-dependent on the day: the archipelago lies well offshore, and the south-west monsoon makes the crossing genuinely rough. The Similan early-bird tour is listed from €107.08 over 10 hours and is one of the most-reviewed trips in our inventory, with 4.7 stars from 4,382 reviews – but only for roughly seven months of the year.
The south-west monsoon runs from about May to October, and its effect is felt hardest on Phuket’s own west-coast beaches rather than on the boat trips. Karon and the southern end of Kata are the beaches most often named for rip currents; Patong’s bay shape channels outgoing water into narrow, fast lanes. A red flag on those beaches means swimming is forbidden, not that you should take care. Drownings on the island run into the dozens each year and cluster in the rainy months. Nothing about a booked boat trip changes that – the flag applies to the beach in front of your hotel.
The park fee is almost never in the price
Phuket’s best-known destinations sit inside national parks, and the entry charge is usually collected separately, in cash, before boarding or on arrival.
For the island part of Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park the rate is 400 THB for foreign adults and 200 THB for foreign children, and divers pay a 200 THB supplement on the first diving day. The 200 and 100 THB that some operators and listings quote is the rate for the mainland part of the same park near Krabi; it does not apply to a boat day out to the islands. Ao Phang Nga is 300 THB for foreign adults and 150 THB for children, Mu Ko Similan and Mu Ko Surin 500 THB and 250 THB. For a family of four on a Phi Phi day that is a meaningful addition to a €37 headline price, and it is not a scam – it is a state charge that most operators simply do not bundle.
Ask before you pay, not at the pier: does this price include the national park fee, and in what currency is it collected? The Khai islands are the obvious contrast, because they sit outside the big parks and several operators state that island entry is already covered.
The land days
Not every day should be a boat. Three groups make up most of what is left.
Elephants are the biggest of them by demand. The ethical feeding experience at Elephant Jungle Sanctuary starts at €23.50 and carries 4.8 stars from 5,476 reviews. A warning that belongs here rather than buried: words like sanctuary, ethical and rescued in a listing title are the operator’s own description, not an independently audited certification. The adventure group is cheap and short. The ATV jungle trip starts at €19.59 with a 30-minute core ride and 4.8 stars from 3,807 reviews. Read the duration carefully: 30 minutes is the ride, not the outing, and the longer options bundle a zipline or the Big Buddha viewpoint. A title promising a Big Buddha view is a viewpoint stop, not temple access.
The city is the cheapest full day on the island. The full-day city tour with night market runs from €27.76 across 9 hours, and the shorter guided Phuket Town tour with hotel transfers from €31.34. Phuket Old Town is Sino-Portuguese shophouse architecture, not a beach resort’s idea of a town centre, and it is the part of the island most people leave out and later regret. The Old Town listings are the place to compare pickup areas.
Building a week that works
A workable rule for a seven-night stay: one long boat day, one close-in half-day, one land day, and at least one day with nothing booked. The long days really are long – nine and ten hours are the norm, and several listings show hotel pickup starting well before the advertised departure.
Put the trip you would most regret missing in the first half of your stay. Weather cancels boat days, and a cancelled trip on day six has nowhere to move to. If the sea is the whole point of your holiday, check whether your dates fall in the Maya Bay closure or the Similan closure before you book flights, not after.
