What the Phi Phi day does to a family
It is worth being blunt, because the photographs are persuasive. A Phi Phi trip is eight to ten hours, of which roughly half is transit, with several transfers between boat and shore in open water. Hotel pickup frequently starts an hour before the stated departure. There is no way to leave early: you are on the boat until it comes back.
Two specific things surprise parents at Maya Bay itself. Swimming in the cove is not permitted – wading ankle-deep is what is allowed – so a child who has spent two hours in a boat looking forward to that beach cannot go in the water there. And the beach closes every year from 1 August to 30 September, reopening on 1 October; tours still run and view the bay from the water. Both rules come from the national park and have changed before, so check what is current for your date.

Costs that scale with the number of children
The national park fee is charged per person and children are not free. For the island part of Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, which covers Phi Phi and Bamboo Island, it is 400 THB for foreign adults and 200 THB for foreign children. The 200 and 100 some operators quote is the rate for the mainland part of the same park near Krabi, and it does not apply to a boat day out to the islands. Ao Phang Nga is 300 THB for adults and 150 THB for children, the Similans 500 THB and 250 THB. It is usually collected in cash at the pier and usually not in the ticket price.
The Khai islands and Coral Island are outside the national parks, so no such collection arises. For a family of four that difference alone is comparable to the cost of another excursion. Beach chairs on Khai Nok are charged separately – local guides put it at around 150 THB for a pair, free if you eat there – and the toilets are pay-to-use.
What to confirm with the operator, in writing
Minimum ages are set per listing rather than by the islands, so there is no useful general number to give you. These are the questions worth asking before booking rather than at the pier:
- Is there a minimum age, and does an infant travel free or occupy a seat?
- Are child-sized life jackets carried, and in which sizes?
- Is there shade on the boat that is not the canopy over the cockpit, and is there a toilet on board?
- Which pickup zone is included, and what time does pickup actually start?
- Is lunch included for children, and is the park fee charged for them?
Ask about child life jackets specifically. An adult jacket on a small child is not the same piece of equipment, and it is a reasonable thing to expect a straight answer about.
When a boat day is the wrong plan
If a child is unwell, if the sea is up, or if the group is already short of sleep, the near islands are the only version worth attempting and the long day is not. If anyone in the family gets seasick, talk it through with a pharmacy or your paediatrician before you go – and pick the 15-minute crossing, which removes most of the problem before it starts.
