Private Phuket Tour: How Much of the Route Can You Actually Choose?

There are two completely different products sold under the word “private” on Phuket, and the price gap between them is not the difference you would guess.

Private group means the fixed itinerary, run for your party alone. Nobody else in the van, no waiting while three other hotels are collected, and a pace you set within a route that was decided before you booked.

Customisable means you choose the stops. That sounds better, and sometimes it is – but on Phuket it frequently comes with a catch that appears on the checkout page rather than in the title.

What the listings actually say

Four examples from our inventory of GetYourGuide offers for Phuket, which held 563 offers on 17 September 2026:

Two things stand out. The cheapest customisable option carries the worst rating on the page – 2.5 stars – and its own description ends with the line “Optional English-speaking guide available at checkout”. That is the catch worth naming plainly: on several customisable listings the base price buys a car and a driver, and the guide is an extra. A driver who speaks some English will take you where you ask. He is not going to explain the shophouse arcades on Thalang Road.

The second thing: 2.5 stars from five reviews, and 5.0 stars from five reviews, are both nearly meaningless as evidence. With review counts in single figures, read the inclusions list and ignore the score. What you can genuinely change

In practice, a private day on Phuket is built from a menu, not from a blank sheet. What is realistically yours to decide:

• The order of the stops, which matters more than it sounds – see the timing constraints below.
• Which landmarks to skip. This is the real value. No cashew factory, no pearl factory, no gem gallery. Group tours on Phuket routinely include one or two commercial stops where the operator earns commission; a private booking is the straightforward way to drop them.
• How long you stay at each place. Forty minutes in the old town becomes two hours if you want it.
• Pick-up point and time, including hotels outside the standard zones that group operators charge extra for.
• Adding something off the standard circuit – a beach, a specific temple, a market on the right evening.

What you cannot change, whatever the listing says

Geography and opening hours do not negotiate.

The island is about 50 km long. Phuket Old Town is on the east coast; most hotels are on the west. Patong to the old town is roughly 45 minutes without traffic. A four-hour private tour that starts in Kamala and includes the old town, the Big Buddha and a southern viewpoint is mostly a drive.

Wat Chalong closes at 17:00. It opens at 07:00, entry is free, and shoulders and knees must be covered. Any afternoon route that ends with the island’s busiest temple will not work.

The Big Buddha opens at 09:00 and closes at 18:00. The site was shut after a landslide below it on 23 August 2024 that killed 13 people in Kata. It reopened for three days on 1 January 2026, closed again, and reopened properly on 3 March 2026 under the name Wat Kittisangharam (Big Buddha), operating under 25 conditions imposed by the forestry department. Entry is free; the dress code is the same as at Wat Chalong. Because access has already changed twice this year, confirm the stop with your operator for your date rather than relying on the listing.

The Thai Hua Museum is closed on Mondays. Open 09:00 to 17:00 otherwise, 200 THB entry with a further 200 THB for an interior photo pass. If the old town is the point of your day, a Monday costs you the one building that explains the rest.

Night markets run on fixed days. The Sunday Walking Street on Thalang Road runs Sundays 16:00–22:00; the Naka Weekend Market Saturdays and Sundays 16:00–22:00; the Indy Market Wednesday to Friday 16:00–22:00. Does the maths work?

Against a group tour at €18.62 to €27.76 per person, a private half day at €117.52 needs four or five people before it is level on price – and at that point you are comparing a car for your family against a shared van, which is a real improvement rather than a luxury. For two people, the €47 to €56 listings are the ones in range, and those are the ones where you most need to check whether a guide is included.

There is also a middle option people forget: a group tour with a small, well-reviewed operator. Phuket City Highlights at €18.62 for 5 hours holds 4.7 stars from 249 reviews, which is a far better evidence base than any private listing on the island.

What to write in the booking message

Private operators answer messages. Ask these five things, in this order, and you will avoid almost every complaint that shows up in the reviews:

1. Is a guide included, or only a driver? If the guide is an extra, what does it cost and in which languages?
2. Are there any shopping stops? State plainly that you do not want them.
3. Is the vehicle air-conditioned, and how many seats? For a family, ask about child seats – operators set their own policy and it is not standardised.
4. Is the Big Buddha confirmed for my date?
5. Does the price include fuel, parking and the driver’s meal, or are those settled on the day?

Put the answers in the booking platform’s message thread rather than on the phone. A written answer is the thing you can point at later.

When a private tour is the wrong answer

If you want the old town itself, a private car is an expensive way to reach a district you can walk in an afternoon – see guided walk or on your own.
