James Bond Island and Phang Nga Bay: Which Tour Should You Book?

8 min read

Limestone pinnacles rising from flat green water in Phang Nga Bay, seen from the deck of a two-storey excursion boat

Phang Nga Bay is the second big boat day out of Phuket, and the one with the widest spread of formats. The same limestone towers, the same photo stop at James Bond Island, and a price range from about €41 to €136 depending entirely on what you are sitting in.

For most people: the Phang Nga Bay and canoeing tour by big boat from €40.32 – the most reviewed Phang Nga trip on GetYourGuide, with shade, a toilet and a full day on the water. If you want the small-group version: the James Bond Island longtail boat and sea canoe tour from €41.58. If you want the bay without the day-trip crowd: the twilight sea canoe with glowing plankton from €84.91, which goes out when everyone else is coming back.

What you are actually booking

The famous part takes about twenty minutes. James Bond Island is the tourist name for Khao Phing Kan, and the needle of rock offshore is Ko Tapu; it appeared in The Man with the Golden Gun in 1974 and has been photographed roughly that often since. You land, you walk a short beach lined with souvenir stalls, you photograph the pinnacle, you get back on the boat.

Everything that makes the day worth ten hours happens around it: the sea caves and collapsed-roof lagoons – hongs – that you enter by canoe at Koh Panak and Koh Hong, the mangrove channels, and the stilt village of Koh Panyee. If a listing does not name the canoe section, you are buying a photo stop with a long boat ride either side.

The big boat is the default, and that is not a criticism

A two-storey wooden boat is slow, which is why these days run to ten hours. In exchange you get a roof, somewhere to sit that is not a bench in the sun, a toilet that works, and a canoe section launched off the back rather than from a beach. On a bay this sheltered the extra speed of a speedboat buys you very little scenery.

The longtail is the better boat for a small group

A longtail carries fewer people and gets further into the mangrove channels. The listing for the nine-hour version adds Monkey Cave – the cave temple at Wat Suwan Khuha – and lunch. The trade-off is real: longtails are open, the engine is loud, and there is no shade except what the boat’s canopy gives you. On a hot April day that is the difference between a good trip and an endurance test.

The speedboat buys back three hours, not more scenery

Seven hours against ten. If your holiday is short, or you have people who will not last a full day, the speedboat version is the sensible compromise and it still includes the canoeing and a buffet lunch. It is also the bumpiest ride of the four, and the one where the hull noise makes a guide’s commentary hard to follow.

The evening trip is a different product with the same postcode

The twilight and plankton tours paddle the same caves in the late afternoon and stay out after dark. They cost roughly twice the daytime price, include two meals, and the thing people book them for – bioluminescent plankton in the water – is a natural phenomenon, not a scheduled item. It is brighter on a dark, moonless night and can be disappointing otherwise. Book it as a kayaking evening that may include plankton, not as a plankton show.

The 300 baht nobody mentions

Phang Nga Bay is a marine national park, and the park charges separately: 300 baht for a foreign adult and 150 baht for a foreign child under the fee schedule Thailand’s park authority introduced in June 2022. Some listings include it, most collect it in cash on the day, and at least one – James Bond Island by big boat and canoe with park fee included – puts it in the title precisely because the others do not. Check the inclusions list before you compare two prices that look two euros apart.

Also worth checking on the booking page: whether the canoe section means you paddle yourself or a guide paddles you through the caves – both exist in this bay and the listings do not use consistent wording – and which hotel zones the pickup covers. Phang Nga departures leave from piers on Phuket’s north-east coast, so a Patong or Kata hotel means an early pickup.

When to book something else

If your one boat day is about beaches and snorkelling, this is the wrong trip: Phang Nga Bay is scenery and caves, the swimming stops are short, and the water is not the postcard turquoise of the southern islands. Read Phi Phi and Maya Bay instead.

With small children, ten hours is a long time to ask for. The speedboat version, or the half-day Khai islands, will go better; our island hopping with children guide sets out what the listings actually state about ages.

The recommendation: unless you have a specific reason to want a smaller boat or a shorter day, book the big-boat Phang Nga day. It is the most-reviewed Phang Nga trip from Phuket, the cheapest of the five here, and the format that handles a long hot day best. Keep 300 baht per adult in cash for the park gate. More departures are on the island tours page.
